Screening & Diagnosis of Stomach Cancer

There are several tests that can be done to confirm the disease. If a patient is confirmed to have stomach cancer, there are other tests that need to be done to see if the cancer has spread to other places or not. The tests are:

  1. Oesophagogastroduodenoscopy (OGDS)
In this OGDS procedure, a camera will be inserted from the mouth. The camera will pass through the esophageal passage before entering the stomach.

In the abdomen, the surface of the wall will be examined to see any abnormalities or tumors. If there is a tumor, a small sample will be taken from the area for examination in the laboratory.

Laboratory examination is important to see if there are cancer cells or not from the stomach sample taken.

  2. Full blood count
In this test, all blood counts will be known. This is important because those with stomach cancer often lack red blood cells. This is due to the occurrence of chronic bleeding from the cancerous area.

  3. CT scan or MRI
These imaging tests are often used to see if the disease has spread elsewhere or not
