Symptoms of Lung Cancer


Signs and symptoms in lung cancer patients depend on the site and size of the tumour and presence of any regional or distant spread.

  • Cough

   â—¦ Persistent cough that is often of a dry type

  • Haemoptysis

  â—¦ Streak of fresh or old blood in the phlegm or coughing up blood

  • Shortness of breath

  â—¦ Initially on mild exertion and later present even at rest

  • Chest pain

  â—¦ Pain or aching at the site of involved chest on breathing

  • Wheezing and/or hoarseness of voice
  • Loss of weight and loss of appetite
  • Fatigue and malaise
  • Persistent or un-resolving pneumonia
  • Swelling and redness of the upper chest, neck and face
  • Nausea, vomiting, thirsty, constipation or confusion due to elevated blood calcium (hypercalcemia)
  • Symptoms from distant spread (metastases)
