Symptoms

 

  • Can be difficult to recognize.
  • Can be asymptomatic in early phase.
  • Can mimic common childhood illnesses such as infection.

  • Symptoms and Signs to look out for:
    1. Unusual swelling, lump or mass
    2. Unexplained pallor /paleness
    3. Spontaneous tendency to bleed or bruise
    4. Prolonged unexplained fevers
    5. Eye or vision changes
    6. Unexplained weight loss
    7. Headaches often with vomiting, at night or early morning
    8. Increased swelling or persistent pain in bones, joints
    9. Recurrent infections
    10. White color behind the pupil
  • The following mnemonic was taken from the Pediatric Oncology Resource Centre:

C ontinued unexplained weight loss
H eadaches with early morning vomiting
I ncrease swelling /pain in bones, joints 
L ump or mass
D evelopment of excessive bruising or bleeding
C onstant infection
A white color behind the pupil
N ausea which persist or vomiting without nausea 
C onstant tiredness
E ye or vision changes
R ecurrent /persistent fever of unknown cause
