Living After Cancer


Nutrition

  • Good nutrition may reduce the incidence of prostate cancer and help reduce the risk of prostate cancer progression. Maintaining good nutrition can help cancer survivors feel better and have more energy.
  1. Meet your basic calorie need.
  2. Get plenty of protein.
  3. Drink plenty of fluids.
  4. Getting enough vitamins.
  5. Make an appointment with a dietitian.


Exercise

  • Exercise is important for cancer survivors. Exercise helps cancer survivors improve long term prospect and the quality of life. In general, exercise may reduce anxiety and depression, improve mood, boost self-esteem, and reduce fatigue.
  • An example of exercise for prostate cancer is to start with 10 minutes of walking a day then walking briskly for 1 hour, six times a week.
  • Tai Chi, Qi gong and Yoga, the movement can be relaxing and rewarding both physically and mentally.


Interact with the health care team

  • Follow up care appointments, answer question about medications, and refer a person to other specialists and supports resources.

Quit smoking

  • Quitting smoking, can improve a person’s recovery and overall health.

Manage stress

  • Joining a support group and practicing relaxation technique are some techniques one may find helpful.


Making time for fun with family and members or others

  • Get together with friend, watch a movie, walk, or play with kids. Laughter can reduce anxiety and improve a person’s mood.
