Pain is a very subjective symptom which is different for each individual, but the pain can be assessed and measured in terms of numbers, such as numbers or other vital signs namely body temperature, pulse, respiration and blood pressure . This means that the pain will always be judged if you get treatment at the hospital.
The best method is to use a scale and asked the patients themselves. However, if difficult to communicate with patients (eg: patients who are elderly and suffer from memory problems or small children ) then the observation method used:
Observation of the patient as a whole based on vital signs
Patients (blood pressure, pulse, respiration and body temperature) .
Observation of the patient's activities.
FLAC scores
There are several scales used for this purpose are:
Numerical Rating Scale (NRS): 0 = no pain , 10 = maximum pain .
Visual Analog Score (VAS): the patient is asked to show the degree of pain using a scale that the total length scale = 100 mm or 10 cm .
Category Scale or Verbal Scale.
Ministry of Health Malaysia has used a standard scale for this purpose a combination of scale Numerical Rating Scale (NRS) and the Visual Analog Score (VAS). Patients are asked to show the degree of pain using a scale of 10cm in length given the numbers 0 to 10 , which means :
Scale : 0 = no pain
Scale 4-5 = moderate pain
Scale of 9-10 = pain is too strong
