What is Lung Cancer?


  • The lungs are paired organ inside the chest which is used for breathing.
  • Lung cancer occurs when a normal cell in the lung undergoes changes and transforms into a cancer cell and starts to multiply and grow out of control.
  • The cancer cells can invade the adjacent structures and spread to other parts of the body such as lymph nodes, liver, bones and brain.
  • Lung cancer is a worldwide problem and a leading cause of cancer deaths in both men and women.
  • In Malaysia, lung cancer is the third most common cancer after breast and large bowel cancer
  • It is often diagnosed at an advanced stage and consequently the 5 year overall survival is only around 15%
